Hypnotherapy is like daydreaming. Have you ever tried to read a book and found your mind is wandering somewhere else? Or, while driving, you get so engrossed in your thoughts that you drive past your turn off before realising what you have done? This happens because your thoughts take you into a trance and your unconscious takes over. With hypnotic trances, we can make you relax and help reinforce the good work that TFT will do for you. Some people are nervous about the idea of hypnotherapy and fear they will lose control of themselves when under a hypnotic trance. Not so! You are in control. You will remain awake but be in a deeply relaxed state. You will go into a trance only if you want to and have rapport with your therapist. A skilled hypno-therapist is able to use the state of hypnosis to communicate directly with the unconscious (also known as subconscious) part of your mind to make the positive behavioural changes that you desire.
Our mind works on two levels – the conscious level, which is responsible for logic, reasoning, willpower, and learning new skills; and the unconscious level. For example, when we learned to walk or play the piano we had to think consciously about every step of the process until it became an unconscious or automatic behaviour.
The unconscious level of our brain is where everything that we see, experience and learn is stored. It is like the hard drive of our computer. The conscious part of our mind, however, works by constantly accessing information from the unconscious part. The unconscious part is responsible for body functions, beliefs, habits, emotions, memories, instincts, imagination and self protection.
When you learn to cycle, your conscious mind will have to concentrate on maintaining balance plus keeping an eye on the road for safety etc. But once you learn to balance and control your bicycle, staying safe on the road becomes a habit which is now stored in the unconscious mind. On the other hand, once a habit is formed, it is very difficult to undo. For example, if you play a wrong note on the piano more than a couple of times, it is very difficult to correct yourself consciously because your fingers get used to continuously pressing on the wrong key. It is quicker and easier to change that habit, or an emotional or behavioural pattern, by reaching your unconscious or subconscious mind directly through a hypnotic trance.
